Digital Crafts
Craft Textiles is an expression to describe all techniques that support the production & customisation of fabrics, from carded wool to spinning yarns, weaving, knitting, tufting, englobing and also the art of carpet making or embroidery. Hand-led practices involve time, expertise and finesse. These techniques have been industrialised for mass production, integrating complexity of automatisations. Several processes, from hands-on, small-scale to big scales. With the rise of digital fabrication, machines were hacked or redesigned to fit with digital design & more automated processes, but still accessible and affordable for craft & design practices, on demand orders or small-scale production. Studio Hilo is one of the references regarding open source spinning machines. In this working group, we want to explore how digital machines can support the development of alpine wool product development.
