DIY wool sorting table using recycling materials

Sorting unwashed/raw wool is one of the most important phases in wool processing, as it's the first step in beginning to add value to the low-cost raw fibre. Sorting table is an essential item, that makes sorting sheep fleece into different quality classes. We made the main frame of the table out of a repurposed child's bed.

Input materials

- discarded dissasembelled child's bed
- 2 wooden slats for holding two parts of frame together
- screws with wingnuts (x8)
- wire mesh to fit the frame
- trestle stand (x2)
- mechanical drill

How to

Assemble the top frame of the sorting table. Measure the right length of wooden slats which will provide support for both frames and fix them into place. Drill holes through the frame and slats for the screws. Assemble the frame. Place the frame onto the trestle stands and cover with the wire mesh. Sorting table can now be used for sorting.

Conclusion

Facebook groups, local flea market websites and the local recycling centre can be valuable source of reusable materials. The wool sorting table enables the vegetable matter, short fibres and other undesirable contaminants to fall through the mesh, leaving cleaner, longer, better quality fibre behind.
